Google Reader)" title="Google Buzz (aka. Google Reader)" />

If you’ve recently decided to keep a household pet, try to stop by some of the rescue centers in your area. Once you’ve adopted animals from rescue centers, you’ll feel better about giving them a second chance at life. But if you don’t know anything about their first home, you could put yourself in big trouble.

To set yourself up for success, you have to learn all about animals from rescue centers. Here are some of the things you should remember.

Adopting pets from rescue groups is probably the most humane thing to do. Image courtesy of Flickr.

Not All Rescue Centers are Created Equally

The first step to learning all about animals rescue groups is to understand the various policies they implement. Some of them do not have access to facilities for housing animals, so they can only help owners find a new home for their pets. On the other hand, some rescue groups with ample funds can house multiple animals in foster homes or designated facilities until the perfect owner comes along.

As you do a little digging and discover all about animals from various rescue groups, you’ll also find some rescue homes that tend to skimp on important health issues, sterilization, and temperament evaluation. Others have stricter adoption processes, so they end up placing fewer animals in new homes. If you want to avoid problems, stick to reputable rescue groups with detailed application processes for adoption.

Choose No-Kill Rescue Groups

Some rescue groups have already adopted the no-kill philosophy. These organizations see to it that animals under their care will not be killed even if they do not find a new home right away. All about Animals rescue group, an organization that provides low-cost spay/neuter surgeries and vaccine wellness clinics adhere to this philosophy. Today, they house over 40,000 dogs and cats in an effort to prevent unwanted litters from being euthanized.

All about Animals focuses on creating solid adoption programs to make sure that every animal gets the chance to find a perfect home. It is also one of the few rescue groups that assists families in providing their pets with spay or neuter surgeries. If you are strongly against animal shelters that euthanize helpless animals, you have to support organizations such as All about Animals rescue group.

These are some of the things you need to remember before adopting a new pet. If you believe that no-kill rescue groups than most of the animal shelters in your area, you have to start finding ways to support their noble cause.

For every endangered species you choose, you’re leaving out other animals that are in as much danger. But still, knowing which animals are endangered is essential to promoting wildlife diversity and stopping certain speciesfrom disappearing at alarming rates.

Here is a short endangered animals list based on the studies conducted by the World Wildlife Fund.

Magellanic penguins are facing extinction due to oil spills and warming ocean currents. Image courtesy of Flickr.

Polar Bears

Polar bears are iconic symbols of climate-induced habitat loss. The US Endangered Species Act added them to the category of threatened species after finding out that a huge population of polar bears will face extinction within the next century. The WWF supports research studies to understand how climate change affects polar bears and to create effective adaptation strategies.

Tigers

Emerging studies suggest that only 3,200 tigers are left in the wild. These endangered animals are currently occupying less than 7% of their original range, which indicate a 40% decrease within the past ten years. Rampant poaching and continuous deforestation may also push this species to the same fate of the now-extinct Balinese and Javan tigers of Asia.

Magellanic Penguins

Magellanic penguins also made it to the endangered animals list because of oil spills and warming ocean currents. These external factors force them to swim farther to support their growing need for food. In 2009, thousands of Magellanic penguins were washed up on the shores of beaches in Rio de Janeiro, with many of them dead or emaciated.

Leatherback Turtles

Leatherback turtles are not only the world’s largest marine turtles but also one of today’s largest living reptiles. They have survived for millions of years but they are now facing possible extinction. While their population is more stable than that of other endangered animals, scientists predict a huge decline due to the large numbers of adults being accidentally killed by fishing fleets and being caught as by-catch.

Monarch Butterflies

Monarch butterflies migrate from North America to Mexico every winter. They need a well-conserved pine and fir forest in Mexico to survive overwintering, but the protection of their reproductive habitats in Canada and the United States is also crucial to saving them. WWF hasdesigned sophisticated conversation strategies to protect the wintering habitat of Monarch butterflies in Mexico.

These are only five of the animal populations that were included in WWF’s endangered animals list. To create a sustainable future, we should recognize the need to protect these animals from habitat loss, poaching, and other threats that may put them on the verge of extinction.

Google Reader)" title="Google Buzz (aka. Google Reader)" />

Children are naturally drawn to animals of all sorts. Having a pet can be a very rewarding and positive experience for a kid. Aside from being wonderful companions, pets also teach them the value of showing compassion for all living things. But as a parent, it is your responsibility to ensure your children’s safety while playing with household pets.

Here are important animal safety tips that are essential to nurturing a harmonious relationship between your children and their pets.

Teach your children to always treat animals with respect. Image courtesy of Flickr.

Know Your Pet’s Moods

The first step to ensuring animal safety is to show your children the right way to treat animals. When animals feel threatened, they are most likely to scratch or bite to protect themselves. Like humans, there are also times when animals want to be left alone. This is exactly why you have to treat animals gently and teach your children how to recognize your pet’s mood.

Treat Pets Like Family

Household pets cope with children better when they are treated like family. If you have a dog, you shouldn’t leave him outdoors or chain him permanently. Dogs that are always restricted tend to be more aggressive, so they might end up biting your children or pouncing on them. Animal safety tips also discourage forcing interaction between children and pets because this makes animals feel anxious or threatened.

Pay Attention to Warning Signs

To ensure animal safety, you should also pay attention to your pet’s actions and behavior. When he is eating, chewing on a toy, or sleeping, it is best to leave them alone for a while. Hissing or growling is also a sign that your pet wants to be left alone. Once you’ve taught your children these warning signs, you can decrease their chances of experiencing pet-related injuries.

Teach Your Child How to Approach Animals

Household pets are not the only animals you should be worried about when ensuring the safety of your children. Stray animals are also an important concern, especially in the case of strange dogs. To ensure animal safety when your kids are outside the house, you have to teach them not to run near stray dogs. Running provokes dogs to chase and attack other people.

These are the most important animal safety tips you need to remember before introducing a new pet to your child. Follow these tips and you’ll never need to worry about your child’s safety every time he or she is left alone with your household pets.

They chew up things that humans won’t ever think of consuming. Sometimes, they are given food or medication that can be deadly poisonous. For these reasons, you have to pet-proof your home and before introducing a new cat or dog to your family.

Follow these simple pet safety tips and you can rest assured that your pets are safe day in and day out.

It is your responsibility to keep your pets safe and happy at all times. Image courtesy of Flickr.

Assess Pet Safety Hazards

The first step to keeping your pets safe is to identify potential dangers. Do you have medicines, household cleaners, or loose electrical cords lying around your house? Your pets could easily get into these things, so you have to deal with them accordingly. Tape down loose electrical cords, cover electrical outlets, and keep hazardous items inside cabinets to prevent your pets from chewing on them.

Feed Them the Right Food

While it can be hard not to share your favorite food with your pets, feeding them food intended for people can make them more susceptible to obesity. Plus, certain ingredients in the food we eat can cause danger to pets. Veterinarians who share pet safety tips also revealed that onions, grapes, coffee, and chocolates are the worst offenders because they can cause life-threatening obstructions among animals.

Keep Them Out of the Heat

Prolonged exposure to extreme heat is also one of the biggest threats to pet safety. You can always take your pets with you every time you need to run some errands, but you have to be extra careful when the summer heat arrives. To avoid them from experiencing heat stroke, take them for walks during cool evenings and never leave them unattended in your car.

Train Your Pets

Just like humans, pets need to be socialized to become physically and emotionally healthy members of any family. Proper training is also an essential element of pet safety tips because it prevents them from getting involved in accidents of all sorts. Once your pet learns how to follow directions and be gentle around other animals, you’ll never need to worry every time you leave them outdoors.

Always Prepare for Emergencies

Your pet is not just a household pet – you’ll eventually learn to treat him like family. Everybody hates thinking of their loved ones getting injured or sick, so it is always best to stay prepared for emergencies. To ensure pet safety, you have to keep an emergency kit on hand at all times. You can also learn basic first aid for pets by simply visiting website of the American Red Cross.

Remember, keeping your pets safe is not as hard as it seems. As long as you know the usual hazards that may threaten their health and wellbeing, you’ll never need to take them to the emergency room again.

If no one takes quick action to stop their rapid decline, future generations won’t have the chance to see them thrive in their natural habitats. Plus, the extinction of any species is roughly equivalent to the loss of a cure for cancer, organisms that clean air, and other benefits that will forever remain unknown to the entire human race.

In line with these pressing concerns, the Endangered Species Act was put into law to conserve ecosystems that greatly affect the survival of rare and threatened animals. Here’s a detailed explanation of how this law protects endangered species from being gone forever.

How Does ESA Work?

The United States ESA aims to protect plant and animal species that are currently on the brink of becoming extinct. It implements various regulations that limit irresponsible actions related to hunting such species, altering their habitat, or transporting them to other locations. Along with certain local laws, this federal legislation punishes those who commit actions that may threaten the survival of rare or endangered species.

The Endangered Species Act protects two categories of plants and animals – threatened and endangered species. The former refers to a certain species that is at risk but not on the verge of extinction, while the latter includes animals and plants that are facing an immediate risk of extinction. Other factors used to determine these categories include how quickly the species reproduces and how damaged its natural habitat is.

What Makes ESA Important?

The Endangered Species Act is important for ecological, medical, and recreational reasons. Since healthy ecosystems greatly depend on a corresponding animal or plant species, its extinction is a sign that the ecosystem is gradually falling apart. If people fail to recognize these early warning signs, they’ll lose the chance to provide humans with healthy ecosystems for a sustainable future.

It is also important to protect endangered species because half of the most-prescribed medicines are derived from plants and other natural products. Now that thousands of people dying from illnesses with no known cure, it is only reasonable to protect all species that can potentially cure such diseases. Plus, tourism greatly depends on animals, plants, and their ecosystems. Any damage to these natural wonders will have a significant impact on this industry.

It is our obligation to protect all plants and animals that are currently on the verge of extinction. Once you’ve had a deeper understanding of ESA and its purpose, you will recognize the endless benefits of protecting the natural habitat of endangered or threatened animals.
